Emily, Saturday 11.12.10
So my brother turned up this morning instead of Monday, which was annoying. He said that he had to do some business in the city next my town but I could tell that he was lying. How much "business" goes a pre-school teacher have on a Saturday? He was checking up on me. Not that I mind my brother making sure I'm alright, and not that I had anything planned for him on Monday, it's just I couldn't be bothered to move all of the clutter from the staircase yesterday. I told him that I was rearranging furniture last night and that I didn't have time to finish. He bought it, he might be smart and good with people but he is awfully gullible. And besides, it's best to stick to the same story to tell neighbours and brothers. Old Mrs Tate from next door asked about the noise just before my brother arrived.
The hardest part was making a quick, on-the-spot lie about Molly. I told him that she was staying with her parents for Christmas but what will I tell him in the new year, that she decided to stay there? He's gullible but not that gullible.
When he left, I put his gift under the cactus plant in the conservatory. No sense in getting a tree and putting up Christmas decorations, I'm the only one here now.
I've never really liked Christmas, the presents, the money wasted on food that nobody eats. I did like spending the time with my brother though.
I went to the shop again. David was working behind the till. We had a longer conversation, about Christmas being rubbish, actually. Unfortunately that got him into trouble with his boss. I'll have to find out where he lives. Not that I'm planning on stalking him, I'd just like apologise without risking getting him in more trouble.
On the way past the deli, my old boss asked me how I was doing. I told her that I was great and tried to leave it at that, so as to avoid talking about Molly, but she just kept on talking and talking and talking. Eventually she asked how Molly was and I decided to tell her that she was visiting her parents for Christmas - best to stick to the same story there as well. She was angry to start with, Molly was supposed to be back at work on Monday. I offered to do a few part time hours and that cheered her up. It'll be nice to get back to work, even if I only do a little bit. And who knows, maybe David shops in the Delicatessen all the time. I doubt it but fingers crossed.
I got the feeling I was being watched again on the way home, in exactly the same place as last time, down by the bottle banks. It's opposite the old people's home, so maybe it's just an old man being a pervert. Maybe I'll wear a short skirt next time I go out, try and give the old git a heart attack. Maybe a short skirt would get David hot under the collar as well.
Anyway, I had a quiet night in. To quiet. I didn't hear a peep from the thing or Cat. I guess that's a good thing but I'm not sure.
I'll talk to you tomorrow.
