Journal, Thursday 31.03.11
I spent last night, and most of this morning, reading over the old entries. There are a few things that I find confusing.
In Emily's last message, she wrote: "They said that Dicky was ArthurMan." Who does she mean by "they"? Charlie and David were the only two people with her, other than Harrison. How would they know that Dicky was ArthurMan? And who are the "others" that she refers to in the sentence: "They told me not to follow Harrison and the others to Germany?"
Furthermore, if Dicky is, I mean, was, ArthurMan, then why, in the entry entitled "Happy Valentine's Day", did he write: "And what about Harrison – poor, lonely Harrison. When we will hear from him? Will he tell you why he really went to prison, or is he too embarrassed?"? According to Harrison, in his message on March 1st, Dicky tried to kill Harrison and therefore thought that he was dead. If Dicky thought that Harrison was dead, why would he bother to even mention him when under the guise of ArthurMan?
I'm beginning to suspect that "they" told Emily that Dicky was ArthurMan just so that she wouldn't think about it anymore. I mean, it's clear, reading back, that Dicky betrayed us. His absence at the beach house occurred just before the DPIR arrived. It's clear to me now that he waited for Emily to join us before contacting the people looking for her. I don't know how much money they offered him for her capture but I'm sure it was a lot. And, when Dicky failed to deliver on his promise, Jennings tortured him for fresh information.
Actually, now that I think about it, perhaps Dicky was ArthurMan. I mean, ArthurMan gave us the information we needed to avoid being captured by the Nightmare People but where was he when the DPIR showed up? And why hasn't he contacted us since?
Unless, ArthurMan doesn't need to contact us anymore because he is one of the "others" that Emily refers to. Or perhaps the "others" are the nightmare people. Perhaps Harrison is working with them. Perhaps Harrison lied when he said that Dicky had tried to kill him. Perhaps Dicky lied when he said that Harrison had gone to prison. And if Dicky lied about that, maybe he lied about everything.
I think it's best for now if I ignore all of the messages from both Dicky and Harrison. Their stories don't add up and if there's no way of knowing which of them was telling the truth, it's probably best to assume that neither of them were.
Hell, I'm even beginning to doubt whether I can trust Emily's last message. Perhaps she and Harrison agreed to tell me that they were going to Germany just so that I would get side-tracked when I came looking for them. Perhaps the two of them suspected that the DPIR would use me to find them, which they have.
There is one lead, however, in Harrison's message on March 1st that seems worth following:
When Emily wakes up, I want you to give her the following message:
"The little blue snake and the big orange bird live in a hospital in Spain."
She'll know what it means.
Both Harrison and Emily once told me, long before all of this crazy stuff started to happen, that they spent their first night alone together sleeping on a bus stop bench, somewhere between Harrison's father's summerhouse and William's father's house in Giens in the south of France. Whilst Harrison mainly bored me to tears with how it was the night that he had fallen in love with her, Emily told me how the two of them had made up a story about some graffiti they had seen on the wall of the bus shelter. A story about a little blue snake and a big orange bird. A story about a hospital in Spain.
My guess is that that's where Harrison and Emily met up between the events at the beach house and Emily's last message. It's as good a lead as any.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to get to France without the DPIR spooks following me…
